Common SEO Issues
Perhaps the biggest problem many small companies face with Search Engine Optimization is the fact that their website was built without a SEO strategy. The first focus is to get the website built, then once it is up, the next step is to get traffic to the site. While this is the most common approach taken, unfortunately most of the expense developing the website does nothing to help generate traffic to the website. More unfortunately many opportunities to optimize the website are completely omitted, with nearly all of the focus applied to the look and feel of the website. So, after all the time and money spent on developing a website, many times it is necessary to revisit and modify the website for SEO. The website content, actual text based content contained in the site, is the most important factor in Search Engine Optimization.
Another mistake companies make concerns the resources allotted for Search Engine Optimization. This usually begins with costly outsourcing to companies promising SEO as a product to be purchased for a one time or ongoing fee. While companies can provide a certain level of optimization, there is a specific problem with this process as the company will know little or nothing about your product, company, industry, customers or target audience which are all critical items in the optimization process. While tools exist to analyze these items, SEO is an ongoing process that requires frequent changes that are very specific, something that is much harder and more costly when outsourced to individuals that are uninformed in these strategic areas of importance.
A common expense for those looking to boost website traffic is the purchasing of Adwords or other similar link campaign to show up in sponsored search results. This “quick fix” has many flaws, first of which is that the cost associated does nothing to improve the generic search engine ranking of the site, meaning the cost will continue to be necessary until proper SEO is achieved. Another problem is that many people will not click on these ads, as the general perception of an ad link is lower then a generic link. This could impact the overall perception of the website or the company as a whole. Of course, this expense will never achieve the level of traffic that a #1 ranking would achieve. Search Engine Optimization is a process, one that takes time and effort, there really is no short cuts or quick fixes. This is actually good news, as it gives smaller companies a chance to rank higher then larger or more established companies, something that might not be possible if the company that spent the most money on quick fixes always achieved the top ranking.
